I think we need to go over how Kickstarter, businesses, and ownership works again.
Guys, you need to be careful about this money situation. Until we know more, don’t donate any money through SMGO when the donation process begins/if it begins. Maybe after SMGO explains their payment plan tomorrow, we’ll know more about whether to trust what they’re doing.
Without WB’s permission, this seems a little bit too sketchy and could even be illegal. Now, with that being said, if we were to raise the $10 million, and WB then said no, we would likely be given full refunds through Paypal. But that doesn’t mean we should be shooting money toward the company just in case.
I want this to be legitimate and real and have hope that if we raise the money, WB will say yes. But we should be careful.
Let’s re-iterate this fans.
The entire reason greenlantern-tas was hesitant to promote SMGO initially was because they did not have the legal go-ahead or rights to fund raise (or even pledge drive) for properties they do not own. Once they were in contact with WB, we were supportive.
At this point, WB has told them “no” and they are attempting a pledge drive anyways. This is massively sketchy legal ground if not out-rightly illegal. The blatant disregard for not having WB’s permission to do this combined with the unprofessional method of announcing that they received a no (throwing all blame at WB with a childish “can you believe they told us no?”) does not instill in me confidence nor trust and is less likely to instill that in the businesses they need to partner with for the SMGO model to function. As the article says:
We’ll keep an eye on this, but word to the wise DC Nations fans: unless a studio publicly makes an announcement of support for something like this, do not give your money to anyone.
EDIT: I have read and do have a basic understanding of their pledge-drive system and how it (supposedly) does not allow them to touch the money. The problem is they do not have permission from the property owners to even start a pledge drive therefore, who will the Merchant on Record be at this point if it cannot be them and they are ignoring the studio’s “no”? The studio clearly is not involved right now. We also have to keep in mind that they have not yet had a single project move to funding. I would like to believe SMGO has good intentions and as a basic concept is not a bad idea in general. However, this does not look legally solid and I discourage participating in it without a go-ahead from WB. All the wishing in the world does not give them the rights to so much as collect pledges for something they have no legal ownership of nor rights to.
Yeah…
Guys, no one is really here to tell fans what to do with their money, because in the end that’s up to ya’ll.
But this is still zero hour news material, just gotta be cautious and watchful, So personally, I’m going to be watching/listening SMGO and other people for as much clarification as possible.
